The village of Birch Creek is approximately 90 nautical miles north of Fairbanks and about 20 miles south of the Yukon River. It is a small village of just less than thirty inhabitants. For over 100 years it has been considered an Episcopal strong-hold. Until about ten years ago when, due to budget short-falls and limited staffing, the Episcopal Church withdrew. The fairly new log chapel then sat silent. The pastor’s log cabin also was quiet and empty. No visiting priest, no itinerating clergy came here to lead singing, prayers, and no preacher stood behind the rustic pulpit.
